In an era of office towers, seas of cubicles and hours of staring at computer screens, many of us are cut off from nature. Our lights are artificial and our views are limited by downtown towers and the skies are filled with light pollution.
So for many of us screen savers and wallpapers are the only touch of nature most of us see during a typical work day.
Studies have shown taking walks and experiencing nature can relieve stress, but new studies have shown images of nature and green scenes can have a stress reducing effect as well.
Findings, documented in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, suggest participants who viewed nature photos and natural imagery in a controlled experiment, experienced lower stress levels. These positive benefits are attributed to the parasympathetic nervous system. That’s part of the nervous system that controls various rest functions.
According to the authors:
“Viewing green scenes may thus be particularly effective in supporting relaxation and recovery after experiencing a stressful period, and thereby could serve as an opportunity for micro-restorative experiences and a promising tool in preventing chronic stress and stress-related diseases.”
Unfortunately, the benefits only come after stressful experiences. Researchers found no anti-stress factors when showing participants nature pictures before stress inducing events.
